August 24-31, 2015 the delegation of the Ukrainian part of the Joint Ukrainian-Chinese Business Council (UCBC) led by its Head Mr.Robert Brovdi and Vice-Chairman Mr.Igor Lytvyn paid a working visit to the capital of the People's Republic of China. The main aim of the trip was the renewal and establishment of communications between the Ukrainian and Chinese parts of the joint Business Council, the intensification of business contacts between representatives of business circles of two countries, discussion of specific steps and measures in order to increase bilateral trade, economic and investment co-operation.
The visit was extremely busy and eventful: it was held more than a dozen of strategically important meetings, presentations, negotiations with representatives of state and political authorities of the PRC (Ministry of Commerce of PRC, the international Department of the CPC Central Committee), heads of various business associations (CAWA), CODA, CCPIT/CCOIC), the top management of leading Chinese corporations (ССОЕС, SINOMACH, CAMCE, CMEC, CCEC), leaders of public associations and societies.
The visit to Beijing was started on August 24, 2015 with the participation of delegations at the diplomatic reception and celebrations on the occasion of Independence Day of Ukraine, arranged by the Embassy of Ukraine to China. On the same day leaders of the Ukrainian part of UCBC Mr.Robert Brovdi and Mr.Igor Lytvyn had a meeting with the Chairman of China Wholesale Agrarian Markets’ Association (CAWA) Mr. Zengjun Ma and Vice Secretary General of China Overseas Development Association - CODA Mr. He Zhenwei.
During negotiations it was discussed, in particular, the prospects of Ukrainian-Chinese co-operation in the sphere of supplying with the necessary nomenclature and volumes of Ukrainian agricultural products the domestic market of the PRC. These issues may be solved with the help of the Agricultural Wholesale Markets Association CAWA as one of the most influential institutions that participates in the regulation, planning and development of the consumer market of the PRC. The meeting participants noted that Ukraine as one of the leading players in the global food trade has the chance to become and is already becoming a key supplier of agricultural products to China. And, therefore, the direction of bilateral trade is mutually beneficial and very promising.
The attending of the meeting by the leaders of CODA – the leading Association for the promotion of investment and production activities of Chinese companies abroad which includes approximately 200 of the largest industrial and energy corporations of China, gave an opportunity to discuss the status and the possibility of attracting Chinese investments into economy of Ukraine. Representatives of the Ukrainian part of UCBC were focused on the prospects and interest of our country and domestic business in the Chinese investments for the implementation of joint projects in the industrial, energy, construction and transport and logistics spheres.
Since 2009 CODA association, working under the direct supervision of the State Committee of development and reform of the PRC together with the China Development Bank, is a co-organizer of the annual forum –China Overseas Investment Fair – COIFAIR. This is the biggest investment event in China which attracts companies from more than 100 countries and is the main platform for foreign investment of more than 1000 Chinese corporations. This forum-Seventh session of the Overseas Investment Fair (COIFAIR 2015) will be held on October 22-23, 2015 in Beijing. Therefore, the meeting participants agreed to promote within the COIFAIR 2015 the Day of Ukraine, where Ukrainian companies will have the opportunity to present to potential Chinese investors their investment projects.
On the next day, August 25, 2015 the co-chairman of UCBC Mr.Robert Brovdi held a working meeting with the Deputy Director of the Eurasia Department (deals with issues of inter-state and inter-regional trade and economic co-operation with 12 countries of the former USSR, including Ukraine, Ministry of Commerce of the PRC, former economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese Embassy in Ukraine Mr. Luo Weidong.
During the meeting the parties discussed the state and prospects of bilateral trade and economic relations between Ukraine and China, in particular the balance of mutual trade, removal of the obstacles and solutions to problematic issues in bilateral trade, the creation of favorable conditions for attracting real investment in Ukraine from China.
The representatives of the Ministry of Commerce of PRC expressed congratulations to the renewed membership of UCBC and its newly elected leadership, expressed the support as to plans for the activation of the business community of Ukraine on the Chinese line, in particular by opening an office of UCBC in Beijing, where each Chinese company will be able to obtain the necessary information about potential Ukrainian partners as well as professional background and organizational assistance on doing business in Ukraine.
The parties agreed to maintain and expand co-operation between the Ukrainian-Chinese Business Council and the Ministry of Commerce of the PRC, primarily in the format of the bodies of the bilateral partnership as well as through joint participation in arranging events (business forums, exhibitions, round table discussions, seminars, conferences, etc.).
