Career:
1976-1980 – diplomatic service with Ministry of Foreign  Affairs of Ukrainian SSR;
1981-1988 – international affairs commentator, author and broadcaster of foreign political programs, Ukrainian TV and radio;
1988-1992 – interpreter/protocol officer/assistant Team leader, Group of Soviet Experts/USSR Trade Mission in Bangladesh, Ministry of foreign economic relations of the USSR;
1992-1997 – Division Chief, Head of Department of Asia & Pacific region, Africa and Middle East countries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine;
1997-1999 – Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in Indonesia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei Darussalam;
1999-2001 – Ambassador Extraordinary & Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in China, North Korea and Mongolia;
2001-2008 – Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Ukraine MP’s Foreign affairs Assistant, Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Top Manager in several national business structures;

2007– 2015 - Chairman of the Board of the Association of Ukrainian-Chinese Cooperation;
2011 - present - Chairman of the Board of the Association of Business Cooperation of Ukraine and ASEAN States;
Since 2011 - Vice-Chairman of the Ukrainian part of the joint Ukrainian-Chinese Business Council;
Since 2011 - this time - Vice-Chairman of the Ukrainian part of the joint Ukrainian-Singaporean Business Council;
2015-2017 - Head of the Regional(Beijing) Office of the Ukrainian-Chinese Business Council;
2017 - this time - Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian-Chinese Strategic Partnership Association;
Since 2019 - Acting Chairman of UCBC's Ukrainian part. 
By Decree of the President of Ukraine № 979/2000 of August 14, 2000, Ihor Lytvyn was conferred the diplomatic rank of Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine.
